Leadership Blog

United Way would like to show our appreciation for our company sponsors, donors, employee campaign managers, volunteers, and advocates. As a thank you for their support, below are articles from Through Eagles Eyes, written by Diane Winn and Tom Searcy, which will be posted monthly. These inspirational articles will discuss today's management and leadership hot topics.

Eagles EyesDiane Winn and Thomas Searcy co-founded Through Eagles Eyes, Inc. in 2006. Through Eagles Eyes, Inc. is a talent management organization. It works with medium sized companies to drive profit growth through their people development. Improved productivity throughout an organization is its goal. Both Diane and Tom have extensive background in the financial consulting field (over 50 years combined) which gave them extensive experience in understanding the challenges business leaders face, as well as gaining expertise in coaching them through those challenges.  Diane is a Professional Certified Coach, one of only a few in Indiana, and Tom is certified in neuro-linguistic programming, the basic science of communication that forms the basis for coaching practice. Also, Eagle Eyes' ability to support performance excellence for its clients took a giant step forward with its alliance with Kerry Garman, SPHR, a highly skilled professional in training, coaching and organizational development.

January 2012

The first decade of the 21st Century produced the poorest economic results in the United States since the Great Depression. We now read about economic problems consuming Europe that are almost certain to visit our shores in 2012, creating renewed challenges for virtually all businesses.

To avoid the worst of the consequences, forward-thinking organizations are taking action now. The question on the minds of many leaders is, "I know we need to do something, but what exactly should we do?"

Let us suggest some places to start...

Intentionally match the right people to the right jobs. The essential resource for business success is a workforce with the ability, the mastery and the passion to complete their work with high quality.

Give every member of your workforce the resources to make sound decisions and to do their individual jobs well.

Grow your workforce with development programs that have a proven track record. Introduce metrics that measure the success of your efforts.

Excellent team members seek autonomy in their work, mastery in their job, and purpose in their career. Educate these people superbly, treat them fairly and they will reward you with excellent performance, exceptional loyalty, and make yours a highly competitive, profitable organization.

Warren Buffet said, "We hire integrity, intelligence and energy. If we miss on the first point, the second two will kill us." What are the tools you use to identify these qualities? Build a solid hiring process and yours will likely be a top performing firm.

This decade is proving to be every bit as challenging as the last. Ensure your workforce is the best in your industry and your organization will be a leader other firms seek to emulate.

Mahatma Gandhi once remarked, "The difference between what we do and what we are capable of doing would serve to solve most of the problems in the world." Resolve right now to be one of the great problem-solvers! The rewards are huge.
