Am I eligible for Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)?
 
We can generally prepare your return through the free VITA program if your household income is $50,000 or less and your return will NOT include any of the following items:
  • Income from states other than Indiana (You must be a full year resident of Indiana to qualify for tax preparation)
  • Rental income
  • Farm income
  • Adoption credits
If you have any of the following items, please contact United Way at 574-232-8201 ext. 228 for clarification before your appointment so we can better serve you:
  • Military income*
  • Foreign income
  • Self-employment income requiring a Schedule C under $10,000** (limited expenses only and no losses)
  • Complicated or Advanced Schedule D (Capital Gains and Losses)
*VITA preparers are certified to prepare returns with military retirement income (on form 1099R) and can prepare returns with active military income (on form W2) at targeted sites only. Taxpayers should call United Way 2-1-1 for more information.
 
** If you are eligible to report self-employment income on a Schedule C-EZ, not for business expenses totaling between $5,000 and $10,000, we may be able to prepare your return.

Who is eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)?
 
EITC eligibility for tax year 2011:
 
Earned income and adjusted gross income (AGI) must each be less than:
  • $43,998 ($49,078 married filing jointly) with three or more qualifying children
  • $40,964 ($46,044 married filing jointly) with two qualifying children
  • $36,052 ($44,132 married filing jointly) with one qualifying child
  • $13,660 ($18,740 married filing jointly) with no qualifying children
Tax Year 2011 maximum credit:
  • $5,751 with three or more qualifying children
  • $5,112 with two qualifying children
  • $3,094 with one qualifying child
  • $464 with no qualifying children
Investment income must be $3,150 or less for the year.
